South Australia has a strong and vibrant artificial intelligence (AI) research-base and ecosystem that brings together government, academia and industry. AI is already driving progress in many of our state’s priority sectors, including space, defence, advanced manufacturing, and cyber security.

In addition to being home to the nation’s first Office for AI, South Australia is also home to the Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML), Australia’s largest university-based machine learning research group, located at Lot Fourteen. AIML leads world-class research and partners with industry and government to deliver practical AI solutions across agriculture, defence, medicine, transport, and more.

Recent milestones include:

  • The launch of the Responsible AI Research (RAIR) Centre, a $20 million collaboration focused on explainable AI, misinformation, and safe deployment of AI systems.
  • Strategic partnerships to advance foundational AI research and attract top global talent.
  • Programmes helping businesses and government agencies apply AI to solve operational challenges and boost competitiveness.

Despite having only 7% of Australia’s population, our state contributed over 20% of the national AI research output in 2021. Global technology companies and local start-ups alike are choosing South Australia for its skilled workforce, innovation precincts, and collaborative spirit.

Our AI ecosystem is built on ethics, impact, and partnership. With world-class research institutions, forward-thinking government policy, and a dynamic tech industry, South Australia is well-positioned to lead Australia’s AI future.
